Rosa International Middle School
MUSIC PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS
It is the goal of the Rosa International Middle School Music Program to offer students a comprehensive course of study that will not only develop their musical skills, but also enhance their understanding and love of music. We strive to offer students many opportunities to explore their musical talent in a variety of venues. It will be through the Standards and Benchmarks that all students will achieve a higher understanding and skill level both in the classroom and in ensemble performance. These Standards and Benchmarks are as follows:
Standard 8.19 - The student sings a varied repertoire of music, alone and with others.
Benchmarks
A. Sings with good breath control, expression and technical accuracy at a level that includes modest ranges and changes of tempo, key and meter
B. Sings music written in two and three parts
C. Knows music that represents diverse genres and cultures
Standard 8.20 - The student performs on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
Benchmarks
A. Performs on an instrument accurately and independently, alone and in small and large ensembles, with good playing position, and good breath or stick control
B. Perfrorms a repertoire of instrumental literature with expression and technical accuracy on a stringm wind, percussion or other classroom instrument with material that depicts modest ranges and changes of tempo,
key and meter
C. Performs music representing diverse genres and cultures, with expression apporpriate for the work being performed
D. Plays by ear simple melodies on a melodic instrument
and simple accompaniments on a harmonic instrument
Standard 8.21 - The student improvises melodies, variations and accomaniments.
Benchmarks
A. Improvises simple harmonic accompaniments
B. Improvises melodic embellishments and simple rhythmic
and melodic variations on given pentatonic
melodies and melodies in major keys
C. Improvises short melodies, unaccopanied and over given rhythmic accompaniments, in a consistent style,
meter amd tonality
Standard 8.22 - The student composes and arranges music within specified guidelines
Benchmarks
A. Knows how the elements of music are used to achieve unity and variety, tension and release, and balance in musical compositions
B. Composes short pieces within specified guidelines (form, range, rhythm)
C. Arranges simple pieces for voices or instruments other than those for which the pieces were originally written
D. Uses a variety of traditional and nontraditional sound sources and electronic media when composing and arranging
Standard 8.23 - The student reads and notates music
Benchmarks
A. Reads sixteenth and dotted notes and rests in 6/8, 3/8
and alla breve (2/2) meter signatures
B. Reads, at sight, simple melodies in both the treble and
bass clefs
C. Knows the standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythms, dynamics, tempo, articulation and expression
D. Uses standard notation to record musical ideas
Standard 8.24 - The student knows and applies appropriate criteria to music and music performances
Benchmarks
A. Identifies specific music events (i.e. oboe entrance, change of meter, etc.) when listening to music
B. Understands how the lements of music are used in various genres and cultures
C. Understand the basic principles of meter, rhythm, tonality, intervals, chords, and harmonic progressions
D. Knows criteria that affect the quality and effectiveness of music performances and compositions
